u – Turn performing arts is a youth’s drama and related arts group based in Mukuru Kayaba informal settlements. The group was formed in June 2008 and registered in February 2009 with the ministry of gender, children and social development. In December 2009 the group registered with the Kenya Cultural Centre as a community based performing and visual arts group. At the time of formation, the group focused on theatre but later diversified into sexual and reproductive health, sports, art & crafts, environment – garbage collection & clean-ups and urban farming with the aim of transforming the lives of disadvantaged children & youths and the general Mukuru population. The group has fifteen members of whom 8 are female and 15 other youthskj whom the group engages during sports tournaments
U-turn has been partnering with the Mukuru community, GOAL Kenya, Oxfam Kenya, Mukuru Slums Development Projects, Youths Initiatives Kenya, Centre for Non Violent Communication, Ministry of Agriculture, Constituency Aids Control Council, Umande trust, Kenya cultural centre, Ministry of gender, Youth fund, Gender & Social development in various capacities in the last eight years.
The projects currently implemented by the organization include:
- LISHE BORA – Urban & rural farming.
- JILINDE - a peer to peer awareness programme aimed at empowering children and youths with life skills to overcome peer pressure and other challenges, advocacy on gender based violence and peace campaigns.
JIJENGE – income generating initiatives aimed at empowering youths and improving livelihoods. They include; water & sanitation services, performing arts, plastics recycling, bead works, capacity building.
