The Challenge Initiative project is implemented in Siaya with an aim of supporting high-impact interventions on increased uptake of Family Planning services and supporting county government commitments on allocations and expenditure for Family Planning and Adolescents and Youth Sexual Reproductive Health Services in Siaya County.
With support from TCI East Africa and funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Gates Institute, Youth Alive! Kenya is working with 30 ward-based youth organizations in the 6 sub-counties in the county.
Goals and Objectives
GOAL: The overall goal of the project was to support accountability efforts for local government commitments on allocations and expenditures for Family Planning and Adolescents and Youth Sexual Reproductive Health services in Siaya County.
OBJECTIVE: To strengthen the evidence base for effective program implementation through prioritization of key issues affecting the county.
- We have been able to link local youth and women CSO with the respective sub-county Reproductive Health coordinators in the 6 Sub-Counties in Siaya for accurate information on adolescents and youths accessing family planning services and information. This was successfully undertaken by mapping local CSOs working on Adolescents Sexual and Reproductive Health programs (ASRH). Through our engagements, we have also supported the Siaya County Directorate of Health (CDOH) in developing a database of youth organizations working in the county on FP
- Through capacity engagement and training of youth advocates on Budget and Policy Advocacy work; and through the Siaya County CSO Network we presented a memorandum to the CDOH on health priorities for Consideration in the 3r Generation CIDP 2023-2027 by the County Government of Siaya.
- In Partnership with the Husika Dada Platform and Siaya Muungano Network, we supported in the development of an FP tracking tool to rack the FP services and information at the local facilities in the County. The tool was administered at Kapiyo health center- West Sakwa Ward, Bondo Sub-County with findings shared with the Sub-County Reproductive Health coordinator – Ugenya Sub-County Mr. Ezekiel Ojwang who commended the team for kickstarting a social accountability initiative on tracking access to FP services and information by the adolescents and youth at the various health centers in the county. He also reiterated that he will share the finding with MOH-Siaya county for replications and support on the recommendation of the exercise.
