This project is a community-based participatory engagement on empowering communities to access their rights and analyse community use of and control over natural resources with emphasis on equal distribution of natural resources between men and women. It also aims to enable community ownership processes by creating spaces for dialogue between right holders and duty bearers to address the community’s concerns in a collaborative manner.
The project was implemented in Uasin Gishu and Kisumu counties. Forum Syd/LSU supported the capacity building of community facilitators with the right-based approaches in dealing with environmental issues and conservation methods that assure sustainability and development of action plans related to environmental conservation and sustainability processes in Nyakach (Kisumu county) and Kapseret (Uasin Gishu county) sub-counties. This was facilitated by the duty bearers, local leaders and community members. The Kapseret community members clean and maintain River Sossain from pollution and disposal of waste in the river. They also protect its ecosystem by planting trees around the area to maintain the river’s surroundings. In Nyakach, the project sensitized and mobilized community members and duty bearers on effects of large-Scale quarry activities being done in the region.
