Who is Duncan Oluoch? (personally and professionally)

My name is Duncan Oluoch , a Youth Advocate, community development practitioner, We Care Champion and finance professional passionate about empowering young people to become agents of positive change and future leaders . As the Youth coordinator of Rays of Change and Hope, I work with communities to promote leadership, mentorship, education, and sustainable development through youth-led initiatives.

My work has earned recognition at the community level, and I remain committed to amplifying grassroots voices and driving sustainable change.

What initiatives or projects are you leading or supporting in your community?

I currently coordinate the KIOTA Project through Rays of Change and Hope in partnership with East African Youth Parliament, where I mobilize and mentor young people in leadership skills, Civic Education in public participation to identify community challenges in relation to governance and develop practical solutions. Our work focuses are on youth empowerment, leadership development, mentorship, community engagement, and partnerships with local leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. I also support project monitoring,
reporting, and community outreach to ensure our programs create lasting impact.

What have been your biggest achievements or successes in this work?
One of my greatest achievements has been empowering young people to become active leaders within their communities. Through our initiatives, we have increased youth public participation in government forums and community programs, mobilized support for vulnerable
children, and strengthened partnerships that continue to create opportunities for young people. I have also contributed to digital literacy programs that trained 50 young people, helping improve access to technology and digital skills. These experiences have reinforced my
belief that empowered youth can transform their communities.

What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

We have faced challenges such as limited financial resources, inadequate access to opportunities, and difficulties engaging some young people consistently as many youth’s sort out to various income generative activities. I have addressed these challenges by buildingpartnerships, mobilizing volunteers, seeking mentorship, and making the best use of available resources and time. Persistence, teamwork, and welcoming community collaboration have enabled us to continue serving despite these obstacles.

How has Youth Alive! Kenya contributed to your journey or supported your initiatives?
Youth Alive! Kenya has played a very very key important role in my leadership journey since our Organisation Rays of Change and Hope was incorporated in Nairobi Working Group by providing opportunities for learning, networking, and engagement with other young change
makers under the We Care project, Good governance and Human Rights. The trainings, platforms, and connections have strengthened my leadership capacity and inspired me to continue creating meaningful impact within my community.

What advice or message would you like to share with other young people working for change in their communities?
Never underestimate the impact of small, consistent actions. Every community transformation begins with one person who chooses to act. Stay committed to your purpose, continue learning, collaborate with others, and never allow limited resources to stop you from making a
difference. When young people work together with integrity and determination, they can build stronger and more resilient communities.
