Assessing And Identifying Relevant Time And Labour-Saving Care Infrastructure That Contributes To Reduction And Redistribution Of Care Work In Nairobi, Kiambu And Mombasa
Youth Alive Kenya, in collaboration with Oxfam in Kenya and KUDHEIHA, is implementing the 'Time to Care Kenya' project to enhance gender equality and care infrastructure for women and girls. The Time and Labour-Saving Infrastructure Report aims to create and foster linkages between the community, especially women, and infrastructure to reduce the burden of care work. Research conducted in Nairobi, Kiambu, and Mombasa has identified time and labor-saving care infrastructure and assessed its effectiveness in reducing and redistributing care work. The study recommends prioritizing water and sanitation, energy, transportation, and child-care facilities, along with equipment for food processing and preparation, cooking, and laundry. Collaboration between private and civil society sectors is crucial for driving innovation and reaching communities effectively. Private sector initiatives are showing promise in implementing Time and Labour-Saving Infrastructure or Technologies (TLSI/T), with strategies addressing gendered care work dimensions and affordability. Ultimately, synergy between companies and community-centric organizations can drive inclusion and socio-economic development.
